Stealing a yawn from yet another Monday morning of inutile busy-work, I bumped into this inspiring personal story (in the small business column of what, to preserve my credibility, will remain a nameless tabloid). After years of fighting for position in the corporate moshpit, and seeking understanding in the pages of books like Clive Hamilton's Affluenza, I've thought long and hard about the perks and pitfalls of 'downshifting' or flying solo. Despite being forced to fall to my knees again due to illness and a tremendous financial error-correction, I remain convinced that I'd derive tremendous satisfaction (and maybe even contentment) from the particular mix of autonomy and challenge that shapes these very personal (ad)ventures. Although my interests sit more with creative and psycho-spiritual spheres than the strictures of standard business offerings these days, principles like these are of universal utility.
